For me, the original Dead Rising was an homage to all that was great in modern zombie folklore. Dead Rising became the basis for all zombie games. In addition, it is just plain fun. All of this has been continued in Dead Rising 2.
I would recommend playing the DLC Dead Rising 2: CASE ZERO first as it will familiarize you with the controls and level you up and get you the Waitress Oufit, Bowling Shirt, Hunting Jacket, and Overalls. DLC is currently free.
Xbox claims it is only free until August 31, 2013, however, I downloaded it August 3rd, long before Dead Rising 2 was free for Games with Gold. Better not take the chance.
