Invigorating Coffee Bubble Bath

Anyone that knows me will tell you how much I love coffee and all things coffee related. This is no big secret. So it should be no surprise that I came up with, yet another way to incorporate coffee into my life.

First of all, let us briefly look at the use of coffee and caffeine in beauty/grooming/skin care. It is all over the place! Some experts claim that the caffeine in coffee is very beneficial to the skin with claims of reducing inflammation, redness and even cellulite. Beauty experts even go so far as to recommend the use of coffee as a way of reducing the appearance of under-eye circles.

So, with this in mind, you no longer think me so wacky for coming up with my Coffee Bubble Bath. Right?

Ingredients
Unscented* Bubble Bath (try dollar stores or mass merchants)
2 oz of espresso or 4 oz of very strongly brewed coffee
Plastic/glass container w/cap large enough to hold it all
Funnel (optional but helpful)
Printer (optional but helpful)

Method
Using a funnel or being very careful, pour half the bubble bath into your container. Pour your coffee into the container next. Now, add the remainder of the bubble bath. Put the cap on your container and secure. Is it secure? Are you sure? Great! Now shake it. The goal is to thoroughly mix the bubble bath and the coffee completely.

Once mixed, make yourself up a pretty label with your printer that includes the directions and any other info from the original bottle of bubble bath. Afix to your container.

Enjoy!

Notes
  • * Unscented is hard to find. Try complimentary scents such as vanilla and call it French Vanilla Sensation or something equally yummy.
  • Do not eat/drink/consume the Coffee Bubble Bath. It smells divine. But is just for the bath water. I guarantee you it will taste nasty. Yes, I gave it a little taste to ensure. ;-)
  • Save the original bottle from the bubble bath to reuse when you make more Coffee Bubble Bath. Clean and dry well.
  • You can use a couple of tablespoons of instant coffee but I find it takes forever for the instant coffee to dissolve completely.
Have you enjoyed this frugally fabuloso project? Let us know!

Frugal Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is a magical time of year when...oh...isn't that how Christmas is supposed to be? Actually, Halloween is the second biggest holiday in North America. When I say biggest, I of course am referring to overall, not just the cash we spend.

A very big expense at Halloween is the costumes. While I have a lavish supply of costumes from all my years living in New Orleans, LA, not everyone is so lucky. So, here are a few ideas for easy peasy lemon squeezy costumes that are fairly low cost and appropriate for all age groups.

Mummy - Old TP works well here. But you can upgrade it (read spend more money) and use rolls of streamers made from crinkled tissue paper. Try alternating between white, off-white and light grey for a great effect. (unisex, ageless, low-cost)

Psycho - So easy. Just put on normal cloths and stick one of those "Hello My Name is" stickers on and fill it in with Psycho written as insanely as you can muster. (unisex, ageless, low-cost)

'80s Pop Star - Simply sling on some skinny jeans and ...oh my, today's fashions are '80s fashions. Makes that easier. Then for gals, tease the hair and get it big. Clunky bright colored jewelry is a must. For guys, a fauxlette (fake mullet) is fairly easy to accomplish with some hair gell or slick back to go for the old Yuppie look. (Male/Female, ageless, low-cost)

Greek/Roman - If you are willing to part with a plain, solid colored sheet, you've got a toga! More people will recognize your costume if you go for the white fabric. But all colors were used so go crazy! Here is how to make a toga, just ignore all the frat/sorority references.. (unisex, ageless, inexpensive)

But for those of you trying to score points with me, go with my time-held favorite, the Zombie.

Zombie - Dig out your junky clothes, the ones you save for cleaning or heavy working. Feel free to splatter fake blood and mud on the clothes. This should be done beforehand to get the realistic Zombie feel. Now, muss up your hair. Nice right? Might want to use a bit of hairspray to get it to stay that dead way. Last, but not least is your make-up. Everyone has their own skill with makeup. But the easiest is a bit of the palest face powder you can get liberally applied to all your exposed body bits. Grey eyeshadow is your next best friend here. Experiment by adding little amounts around the eyes using a makeup brush. Now, using a blush brush, create some drama and hollowed out cheeks by sweeping the grey eyeshadow under your cheekbones. The optional grey eyeshadow mixed with some petroleum jelly for the lips is completely optional. For gals, whom are really into the Zombie look, I have found doing my makeup as normal save for the paling myself out and then smudging my eyeliner and lipstick to be very dramatic and Zombie-ish. For the more adventurous, slashing oneself artfully with fake blood really adds to the Zombieness. More adventurous sorts can also secure fake wounds that are adhered to the body. (unisex, ageless, inexpensive)

So, what will you, your kids (if you have any) be dressing up as this Halloween?

Earn Stuff For The Next Gods Of War

OK all you Gods of War fans that are too busy actually playing video games to have realized there is a game on godsofwar.com you can sign up for and earn stuff for the next Gods of War game coming out. What you are looking for on the website is to join Rise of the Warrior.

Once you are all signed up, start looking for the clues and answering them.

Allegidly what you can earn for yourself includes Playstation Plus Trial Membership, in-game items, in-game XP and earlier access to the Beta.

I do not have the answers to the clues. Hopefully some generous gamer will be kind enough to submit the answers to help his/her fellow gamers out via the contact form or the comments.

Savvy Gamer Tactics: Renting

Renting games is not something most gaming studios advocate. The official policy, as it appears to me, is that renting games doesn't put money in the hardworking studios' pockets.

That said, I do rent games. I rent games for two reasons: Economics and how I feel about a game. The economics part is easy to figure out: I only have so much money to spend on video games.

The how I feel about a game is dependent upon the demo or lack of one. Often, a demo is too short for me to really get a proper feel for a game. Or perhaps I like the game a bit, but some aspect such as the way the game controls function turn me off to spending the money on it. I have written about demos before and how important they are.

The simple solution is to rent the game. For myself, other dedicated  gamers I know, parents with kids that game, renting is a smart and frugal choice.

With renting games, you can, cleverly, chose to do a monthly subscription which will maximize your gameplay and minimize your spending. Why monthly and not popping into the local shop and renting randomly? Simple. Most game rental providers allow you to have out unlimited games each month, one at a time. Or two at a time, etc. for a set price. Paying for game rental each time adds up quickly.

Right now the two main video game rental subscription providers are Gamefly and Blockbuster in the USA.

Gamefly offers a free month trial in which you sign up for a basic subscription of one game out at a time for $15.95/month or the $22.95/month for two games out at a time. Plus tax. Free shipping (of course).

Blockbuster offers a free month trial in which you sign up for 1 disc at a time subscription for $9.99/month or 2 discs at a time for $14.99/month or 3 discs at a time for $19.99/month. Plus tax. Free shipping as well.

The savvy shopper will see that the Blockbuster deal is $5.96 cheaper for their basic service. Plus it is for a disc. Which means, yep, you can rent a game. Send it back. Rent a DVD. Send it back. Rent a game...you get the picture.

With Gamefly you can rent a game. Send it back. Rent a game. Send it back....and so forth.

How does this all equate to you, the frugal shopper? Savings. Instead of plunking down as low as $7 per used game (trade-in value of about $0.25) and as high as $120 for a new special edition version of a game, you get to play the game and more if you time your rentals for under $20 a month.

There is a major downside to renting games released since 2011. Multiplayer. Gaming studios have gone to, or going to, multiplayer verification. How this works is that new games will have a code included that you enter giving you "free" access to the multiplayer part of the game. In reality, it is simply checking that you paid full price for a new game.

The games that have this multiplayer verification also provide the means for players to purchase the verification, usually called an Online Pass. Average price for this is $10/per game/per pass. Great for buying used games.

So, when you are looking at renting video games, look to see if the game is more heavily towards the multiplayer. And figure out if that game is one you will focus on multiplayer with. If so, do a quick price comparision between different retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop, etc. Find the best deal on a new game.

But for games that are all about the single player experience or if multiplayer doesn't matter or if the game is older than a year old, rent it.

Finally, to maximize your savings, set a schedule. In our home our schedule runs like this:
  1. Two games a month. I chose one game. My significant other chooses the second game.
  2. Each person gets to play each game for 5 days. Once the 5 days is up the other person plays for 5 days.
  3. When the 10 days is up, game goes back.
  4. Rinse and repeat.

Now 5 days might not seem like a lot. And there is flexibility. If I don't feel like playing the rented game one evening despite it being my turn, I don't hoard the game. The other person can play it. No biggie. It all works itself out in the wash.

Are you a renter or are you a strict buyer? Let us all know your experiences renting!

Bubble & Squeak - Yummy Scrummy!

Before we dive into this recipe, I will point out that all over the UK and it's colonies and former colonies, this dish is found. It is a working class, frugal dish. It also varies widely. This is because Bubble & Squeak is...drumroll...fried leftovers! So, I shall be very vague in the ingredients and offer suggests. In addition, measurements are not exact with this. Feel free to improvise.

Also, yes, I grew up in England. A small village in Wiltshire County (I'm a Moonraker). I loved when my friend Lisa's mum made this for us. I thought it was divine! So, this is from watching her cook it in her tiny kitchen. I make it on occasion and my family loves it. But who doesn't love comfort food? Enjoy!

Ingredients
Leftover veg such as carrots, peas, Brussels sprouts...whatever is in your 'fridge.
1/2 a head of cooked cabbage
3 medium potatoes/turnips (boiled/baked/cooked) chopped
A few slices of leftover bacon/sausage/ground beef/lamb/chicken (can be left out entirely)
Stick of unsalted butter
1 medium onion, chopped

Method
Saute the onion in the butter until it is nice and soft. Now chuck in everything else and let it fry gently for about 30 minutes on medium-high heat. Listen for the bubble and squeaky sounds. Stir often so it doesn't get all brown and icky. Serve as is!

Notes
If you are worried about burning the butter, add a few drops of cooking oil.
This is not a healthy meal but it tastes soooooo good. Think moderation when doing this. I make this about once every few weeks. A big pan of it.
Freezes OK.
Serves about 4 hungry people.
If you froze your leftovers, defrost before cooking Bubble & Squeak to prevent injuries from hot fat and water meeting.
Keeps for about 5 days in the 'fridge.
Excellent quick meal for marathon gaming sessions.

What do you think of Bubble & Squeak?

Demo First. Always.

When I first started playing video games, I do not remember any demos being available. But then a few years later, you could snag, for free, a shiny disc that let you play a bit of the game. I loved those! I remember arranging my game demo discs the same way I arrange my games: Genre and then by title.

Nowadays, gaming studios cut costs by not releasing, on disc, a game demo. If you find one, hang onto it! It is rare. Instead, via PC/Mac or gaming console, you connect to the internet and then hunt down the game demo and then download it. Yes, there are many steps to it. But, it is well worth it. Let me explain.

With the average cost of a new release video game around $60 (USD) many wise gamers think before plunking down their hard-earned cash. That is a substantial chunk of money for a video game that may, well, let us be honest, suck.

For me, unless it is a well-known title from a series that I have played before and just love, I demo it. Most people I know will demo games. Or at least they tell me they demo a game at my constant insistence the game is amazing and they must play it.

How does a demo help? Well, it let's you preview, play a bit of the game before you buy it. This does not only apply to new releases or upcoming releases. Many video games made over the last decade or so have some sort of demo you can try out for free. This lets you see the game graphics, how the cells handle, if the controls are intuitive and, if the game is fun. That is the most important part.

Even if you are not a gamer but a Mamma of a gamer. Or a Daddy of a gamer. The golden rule before buying a game should be "Demo first for one week. Still want it?"

I remember when Soul Caliber IV came out. I rushed out and got it as a new release. Then came home, put it in, enjoying that new game smell. I was so excited I dropped my Xbox 360 controller twice as the game was loading. Mindset on how awesome and how fun the Soul Caliber series was (and is), I dove into the story as Yoda. Ten minutes later I was done. I felt used and cheated. This game was set to be a multiplayer with the single player aspect being almost an afterthought.

Multiplayer? But all my multiplayer time was devoted to playing with my gaming clan on my beloved Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. Yes, there was the single player challenges in Soul Caiber IV. But the bottom line was this: If I had bothered to demo the game first, I would have seen the aspect I loved about Soul Caliber was so small, it might as well have not been included in the game.

I had wasted $60 on a game.

I learned my lesson, and I learned it well. Demo a game first. Even if the game is 7 years old and only costs $7. Demo. Demo. Demo.

So what if the big gaming authorities reviewed the game and everyone in the world says it is the best thing out since sliced bread? I'm not everyone. You are not everyone. Demo first. Always.

Be A Guest Writer At Frugally Fabuloso

It was pointed out to me recently that Frugally Fabuloso doesn't look like a blog that accepts guest posts. This is far from the truth! We do!! In fact, being a guest blogger is very easy here at Frugally Fabuloso.

Let us get the ugly business of what we are firm about not doing here:
  1. No posts on religion or politics. There is an old saying, unfashionable now, that indicates religion and politics isn't to be done in polite company. We follow that here. There are plenty of blogs and websites devoted to such things. We are devoted to being frugal.
  2. No syndicated content. It has already been done and indexed by search engines. Having old news here is redundant.
  3. Keep it G rated as much as possible. Everything we put on the internet is archived, somewhere. Just take a look at The Wayback Machine.
  4. Make sure the pictures, if any are used, are yours or legitimately public domain. If not, provide a credit as per applicable laws.
  5. Going back to the polite/impolite dealie, no referral links/affiliate links. It is just rude. ;-)
  6. Do not copy other people's work. Even "borrowing" heavily from someone elses writings is frowned upon here to say the least.

What we do allow here:
  1. I write in a conversational tone. That means, I write each post the same as if I was telling you in person. This is acceptable here. This means sometimes grammar is chucked out the window. Oh, we do try to abide by grammatical rules, but it is OK if your grammar isn't perfect.
  2. Posts do not have to be huge essays. So long as what you submit is at least 200 words, you should be good.
  3. I grew up with the internet and I am 40. This should indicate why I do not download any attachment. Just submit to me in an e-mail body.
  4. Frugally Fabuloso covers a huuuuge range of topics. Yes, we focus on being frugal heavily. It is in the title. But we also write about beauty, gardening, gaming, couponing, reviews, being green...you get the idea. Take a look to the right of this posts at the "Contents" widget. If you want to write about something that is not listed there, drop us a note to see if your idea can fit in here.
  5. A short bio/promo about yourself at the end of a guest post. A few sentences is wonderful and common practice these days. Let the world know who you are.
  6. All links here, unless directed to another post/page on Frugally Fabuloso, open up in a new window and we heavily use the noref tag. Guest bloggers' short bios are one of the rare exception to the noref tag.
  7. You do not have to be a blogger or any real writing experience to be a guest writer here. Just a desire to share something you know. We are happy to help if you need any.

Sounds good right? Thought so. Go ahead and let us know if you have an idea for a post or just want to see if you can post here. You stand to lose nothing and gain, well, you can gain a post right here at Frugally Fabuloso.

Xbox Rewards For October 2012

I hemmed and hawed over posting this month's ways to earn MSP over at Xbox Rewards due to the fact that you need to be an Xbox Live Gold member (paid subscription) to really earn this month as a USA Xbox Rewards member. But, Sue B. hit us up on our Facebook page with the info her son got and I realized, Gold or not, it's still a way to earn MSP.

Election 2012
"Any Xbox LIVE Rewards member in the United States who watches 3 out of the 4 presidential and / or vice presidential debates on Election 2012 on Xbox LIVE for 30 minutes or more each will receive a Halo 4 Warrior Armor for their Avatar."

You will need to install the NBC app (free) and the Live Event app (free) plus be a Gold member (to watch the debates, even repeated) to earn this. You will get the token for the Halo 4 Warrior Armor (Avatar gear) on or about 11/1/2012.

Reward: Halo 4 Warrior Armor for your Avatar.

Read the fine print on the Election 2012 offer.

Spook-tacular Rewards
Spend 2,000 or more Microsoft Points on horror-themed Zune movies, TV Shows, Avatar items, Game Add-ons, Themes, Games on Demand, or Arcade Games, you'll get 300 Microsoft Points back from October 1, 2012 to October 31, 2012.

Important: "Horror related Zune movies, TV shows, Avatar items, Game Add-ons, Themes, Games on Demand, or Arcade Games. Eligible movie content can be found here. Eligible games are horror-themed, like Left 4 Dead 2, Resident Evil 5, or The Walking Dead, and any Avatar items, Game Add-ons or Themes that go with them. Movies and TV Shows must be purchased from Zune Video; purchases from other apps will not qualify. If you aren't sure if an item qualifies for this offer, please make a new post in our support forums."

Note: 2000 MSP is $25 (USD). 300 MSP is $3.75. You can do the math to get your "is it worth it".

Read the fine print on the Spook-tacular Rewards.

Ongoing Monthly
*New* - MyAchievements
"Xbox LIVE Rewards MyAchievements is open to Xbox LIVE Rewards Gold members who are legal residents of the fifty (50) United States (including District of Columbia), United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Spain or Italy and are thirteen (13) years or older."

The program is divided into 3 sections: Contender (3000-9999), Champion (10000-24999) or Legend (25000+). The numbers being your Gamerscore. So, if your Gamerscore is 17950 you would be a Champion.

At the Contender level you get a special gift during your birthday month. Champion level gets you a special gift during your birthday month and a 1% rebate on purchases each month on Xbox Marketplace. Finally the Legend level gets you a special gift during your birthday month and a 2% rebate on purchases each month on Xbox Marketplace.

For the rebates only purchases that are from Xbox Marketplace for Games on Demand, Arcade Games, Game Add-ons and Avatar items specifically are eligible. And, after much digging and asking around, I found out the special gift is 20 MSP ($0.25 USD).

Reward: Varies depending on your Gamerscore and how much you spent.

*New* - Community Playdate
"Participate in 8 or more Playdate events within a calendar month to earn 100 Microsoft Points. You must participate in each Playdate event for at least 60 minutes in order for it to count."

Reward: 100 MSP.

"You must be an Xbox LIVE Rewards Gold member to refer friends and an Xbox LIVE Rewards member to be eligible for the referral reward."

"Refer-a-Friend (the "Offer") is open to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States (including D.C.), the United Kingdom, Mexico, France, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Italy, and Spain, thirteen (13) years old or older and Xbox LIVE Rewards Gold members at the time of entry"

This offers a standard 100 MSP reward for you, the referrer, and a 400 MSP to the person you referred. But, some months also offer a XBLA game as well. Check often.

Reward: 100 MSP per eligable referral, max 5 referrals each day.

Read the fine print on Refer-A-Friend.

Quick Survey
Usually the survey is a short poll and is worth 20 MSP ($0.25). Doing the monthly survey will take you 5 months before the 100 MSP will be deposited into your Xbox Live associated Gamertag. Everyone, free or paid gets this. Great for second accounts as well.

Reward: 20 MSP.

There are other ways to earn with Xbox Rewards. The handy at-a-glance guide to earning Xbox Rewards is found right here (link removed by Xbox). I keep it bookmarked and look at it the beginning of each month and the last week of each month to see if I maximized my rewards while minimizing my spending.

Remember, Xbox Live Rewards is free. If you already have an Xbox 360 account, why not join? Even as a free member you can slowly earn rewards. Go here and log in with your Windows ID associated with your Gamertag.

Finally, if you are curious on figuring out how much cash you are saving or earning I found this MSP Converter very handy. It converts the MSP value into 10 different countries' currencies.

Pumpkin Pie Cake (Easy Peasy)

I will be honest and admit this was a mistake. But, it turned out to be a good mistake. I was making a cake from a box. I asked my friend to open a can of pureed pumpkin for me while I took a phone call. When I came back, my friend had dumped the pumpkin into the cake batter. Never one to waste, I mixed it together and presto, a wonderful pie cake.

Ingredients
White or Yellow Cake Mix, cheap-o boxed kind is just fine plus all that the cake mix asks for such as eggs, oil, etc.
1 can of pureed pumpkin (the kind you use to make pies with)
Pre-made cream cheese cake frosting (optional)
1/2 cup powdered sugar (optional)

Method
Mix the cake mix together as per their directions including oven temperature, etc. Once cake mix is ready, fold in pumpkin.

Bake as per directions of cake mix plus 5 minutes to allow for the extra moisture of the pumpkin. Check cake often to prevent burning.

Cool cake and frost with your fav frosting or dust with powdered sugar.

Notes
  • Experiment with different cake mixes to find a flavor combo you love!
  • Switch the pumpkin for sweet potato. Or add 1 cup of your fav fruit such as peaches, strawberries or blueberries. Canned fruit doesn't work very well as it has so much liquid. I find lowering the temp of the oven and increasing baking time helps.
  • This is very yummy served for breakfast.
  • Freezes OK.
  • Keeps covered in 'fridge for about a week.
  • Smaller squares make nifty lunch treats.

Q. How much does it cost to enter these text & win contests?
A. If you have texting included in your cell phone plan, then nothing more. If you pay per text, look at the alternate ways to enter contests.

Q. Does anyone really win these?
A. Yep. I have won a few. I tend to fund my Xbox Live Avatar with nifty outfits and pets using won MSP.

Any other questions or other contests? Let us know by posting a comment!

Welcome A New Author

I am pleased to announce that a friend of mine will be joining Frugally Fabuloso as an author. She goes by the handle Dancin Diva but I know her as TT. That is her to the left of this post.

A little background on Dancing Diva...let me see...we met, way back in Call of Duty: Black Ops...so that would be late 2010/early 2011 via her brother. My gaming clan was looking to add a few new players and, while he was not interested, he suggested her.

Despite both her and I being loud opinionated gals, we got along like a house on fire. Since then, we have exchanged tips & recipes, chatted, discussed fishing, family, shared secrets and all that girl stuff, all while playing first person shooters. It would annoy the other team if they realized how many mundane conversations were being had while they were being defeated. But, I digress.

Dancin Diva will be doing all things Xbox 360 Kinect related as well as sharing her weight-loss journey, advice and tips. But, as this blog is a real hodge-podgery, she may post about anything almost that strikes her fancy.

She is a sweet, forward thinking woman and has a heart of gold and curses less than I do while gaming--Everyone, please welcome Dancin Diva!
