Video Games To Movies
As some of you are aware, the video game industry is probably the hottest, most profitable industry to be in. It has been for quite a few years and looks as though it will be for more years to come. With the spectacular graphics of video games reaching a point of realism that is unparalleled, it is only natural for many game studios/creators to try to get every penny from the consumer. Hence the rash of upcoming movies based on very popular video games and video game franchises following in the footsteps of the original Tron movie. For you gaming and viewing pleasure, here they are!
The Confirmed
Metal Gear Solid - This is a great video game franchise. I loved Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater the most! Hideo Kojima is alleged to have written the script, Konami Digital Entertainment America is the main production company behind this movie and it's expected release date is sometime in 2012.
Mass Effect - A great and visually stunning game. There is much speculation about the upcoming movie tentatively due out in 2012. Unless the right team is brought on board, the sweeping video game imagery will be lost and the movie will be made cheesy and destroyed.
Halo - Yes, there was a Halo movie already made and released. But it was a terrible animation. All that money Bungie and Microsoft made from the Halo franchise and yet they made such a visually ugly movie! Bleh. However, this little gem is the real deal from the look of things. Let me quote for you:
"After they crash-land on an artificial ring-world called "Halo", a navy captain, his surviving marines, and a chemically-and-surgically-enhanced supersoldier named John-117 "Master Chief" must find out what the Covenant, the genocidal alien race they are at war with, are looking for on the ring. However, Halo holds more secrets than either side imagined."
As you can see, this movie takes us to before the video games Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3. Very Halo: Reach. And finally they are putting down some real movie money on a Halo movie. $100,000,000 is the estimation.
We can look forward to this in 2012.
Silent Hill 2 - After loving the Silent Hill gaming franchise, I did also love the Silent Hill movie. Well, wait no longer, er wait a touch longer. A sequel to the popular Silent Hill movie is in the works with an expected release date of 2011.
Kayne & Lynch - Eh. An OK video game. Not good enough to justify a whole movie but who am I to say right? Expect to see a film adaptation of this video game sometime in 2011.
World of Warcraft - As with all super popular game series/titles, there is great fear that Legendary Pictures will destroy a beloved game in their movie adaptation. Slated for release in 2013 fans are excited by worried.
Red Faction: Origins - This is a confirmed title of a movie based on the awesome Red Faction video games series. SyFy channel is making this made-for-TV-movie and has confirmed it's release date of March 2011. The film is set in-between the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla and Armageddon.
BioShock - It looks as though this film will be taken straight from the first BioShock video game. I am wildly hoping that the movie keeps the mixed eras of the video game series and the mad scientists without morality going. The expected release date is sometime in 2013.
Castlevania - This in-production movie is based on a great video game series. Apparently an animated movie was put on indefinite hold to ensure this one would come out next year, 2011.
Gears of War - This wildly anticipated movie has had it's budget and storyline drastically cut to the point that fans of the video game series are worried, myself included, that the movie will end up being...well...rubbish. It looks like this low-budget action film is due out 2012.
Dead Space - Now this game really scared me. I had to play it with all the lights on. The studio really did an amazing job with the game. It looks like they are trying to do an amazing job with the upcoming 2013 movie that is going to be a prequel. Squee! More movies!
Spy Hunter - Remember this great arcade game from 1983? While I am too young to, I have played it as I learned all the retro games. Well before the gaming studio Midway died, Warner Brothers managed to get the rights to this. So fans, look for this amazing movie 2012.
Mortal Kombat - After much legal messiness, it looks as if this fun game franchise is being made into a movie, again. The plot is much the same as the first Mortal Kombat movie except it will be dark and as the writers originally wanted it. Wow. Lose the bubble gum pop-ness and bring on the pain! Expect to see this flick in 2013.
The Sims - This hit video game franchise, already 10 years old, is going real world! That is to say, we can expect to see a movie in 2012. With real actors, not simulated ones. Get it? I'm too clever at times.
Rollercoaster Tycoon - What? Seriously? Well, of all the things for Sony Pictures to pick up, this is it. Apparently this movie will be a-la-Avatar in it's live-action/CGI hybridization. We can expect this gem in 2012.
Spore - Remember when this game was free? You had to download the stuff and go to work at it. It was advertised as a Neopets alternative back in 2006. Then EA gaming studios got their hands on it and it costs you money. I remember being very bored by the game when it was free. And annoyed. Yet somehow this game is going to be a movie produced by Fox. No release date given yet.
Rumors & Speculation
Red Dead Redemption - Now, this is all rag gossip speculation so take this bit with a grain of salt. Allegedly there is a movie in the works based on this spectacularly popular video game. Gossip has it that Brad Pitt is being given first offer at the lead role of John Marston. That said, Rockstar Games is officially saying that this is all just a rumor. As if any gaming studio would turn down a movie deal to milk some more pennies!
Call of Duty - With Activision filing trademarks for "Pre-recorded movies featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure, music, theatrical performances and/or animation." and then Robert Bowling having that now famous lunch with Xavier Gens, director of the Hitman film back in October 2009, there is a lot of speculation on a movie. For those of you that play the Call of Duty series, there isn't much of an ongoing storyline. But, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game storylines are great! Definitely something I can see put on the big screen.
Missile Command - This classic arcade game according to rumors has been pitched all over Hollywood by Atari. Fingers crossed someone picks it up to do something great with it!
Space Invaders - Ah another classic game looking to be reborn on the silver screen. Here's to hoping Warner Brothers does it!
